These limitations aren’t just annoying, they’re structural. Most other platforms are built on outdated tech stacks, held together by a patchwork of third-party systems, expensive compute layers, and years of compounding technical debt. Every search a user runs can rack up real compute costs, especially when paired with inefficient indexing or bloated architectures weighed down by years of tech debt. So, instead of fixing the system, they restrict the user.

The result? Curiosity gets filtered. Users are forced to treat each query like a scarce resource. Instead of exploring, they get stuck optimizing and overengineering brittle, hyper-specific queries that are as limiting as the systems that require them.
In platforms with strict query quotas, every search becomes a high-stakes bet. You can't afford to run a broad or creative search because it might fail, cost too much, or eat into your quota. You have to get it right on the first try. These strict requirements are why many teams write massive, unwieldy Boolean strings that attempt to anticipate every variation upfront. Now that we’ve mentioned topic caps and query limitations, let’s jump into an arguably even more serious limitation: analysis limitations. One of the biggest red herrings in social listening today is the obsession with “firehoses” and post volume. For years, vendors bragged about their access to full firehoses. Firehoses are expensive data pipelines from social networks like Twitter/X (which, notably, no longer publicly offers this as a feature and once charged upwards of $40k+/month after Elon’s takeover).
The implication from firehose sales? More posts = better insights. We wholeheartedly reject that idea.
Most platforms won’t tell you this: while they may collect more posts, they only analyze a small fraction of them. For core linguistic features like sentiment, emotions, or themes, many tools are analyzing under 5% of their total dataset. With that much sampling, you’re looking at a sliver of reality. Sampling can be helpful in academic settings or for exploratory analysis. But in this context, aggressive undersampling is a liability. It hides nuance, amplifies noise, and makes it dangerously easy to misread what’s happening.
Sampling limitations are the nuance many users miss: Just because a platform shows higher volume numbers doesn’t mean it gives you better results. It just means they pulled more posts. The analyzed portion, the part you actually care about, could be tiny.
Worse, these inflated volumes are often heavily skewed toward just a few platforms. Twitter (now X) and Reddit dominate most social datasets from competing vendors (e.g., the platforms offering those expensive firehoses). That skews results, overrepresents specific demographics, and leads to platform bias, which most researchers are unaware of.

Most social platforms that claim to offer LLM-based summaries or topic detection are simply feeding small, sampled sets of posts into GPT-like models. The results? It is often generic, sometimes downright wrong, especially if the prompt engineering is weak or the sample set is unrepresentative.
