Nokia this morning introduced a series of basic smartphones and higher-end Windows Phone-powered smartphones at the Nokia World 2011 event in London. The company has posted several videos featuring the phones on its YouTube channel.
The struggling giant is trying to stage a comeback with the bevy of new products. Twitter and Square founder Jack Dorsey has some advice for the Nokia via Twitter today: “you make too many products. Focus on 3.” It’s a very Steve Jobs piece of advice, who famously said, “Focus is about saying No.”.
How did consumers react to the Nokia news? We used Social Radar to analyze conversations online.
Nokia buzz

Nokia mentions increased 550% to their highest point within the last six months.
Nokia sentiment

Conversations around Nokia are currently more than 80% positive. ‘Windows phone’ is being mentioned in 34% of Nokia conversations and is 92% positive.
Is Nokia back on the path to success? Or is the company trying to do too much?

Nokia announed this week plans to reclaim its competitiveness in North America, beginning with a big-blast ad push set to launch this week promoting new handsets. According to an Ad Age article, the ads target value-conscoius 18-34 year olds, attempting to undercut price on market leaders iPhone and Droid.
We used Social Radar to measure chatter around Nokia, iPhone, Android and Motorola.

Nokia has a long way to go to catch iPhone or even Android in buzz. Will the new campaign help Nokia capture online conversation share in a big way?

The September 2009 Social Radar Top 50 measures the brands with the most active Web presence based on overall online conversation volume. To create the Top 50 list, we used Social Radar to analyze millions of blog posts, news feeds, forums, social networks and Twitter posts to aggregate a list of the words and brands mentioned most frequently on the Web during September 2009. The list measures the number of unique individuals or sources that posted content about each brand during September 2009 rather than the overall number of mentions, which would be more heavily influenced by big fans who post frequently about a specific brand.
Twitter falls a bit, but still takes top spot. LG’s new BL20 Chocolate helped LG jump 11 spots. NFL rises again this month as the NFL season heats up. MTV jumps 13 spots due to buzz around the MTV Video Music awards. AT&T’s announcement of MMS support on the iPhone raised AT&T’s position up 5 spots.

There’s the iPhone…and then there’s everything else. iPhone generates more than twice as much chatter as the next highest competitor, dwarfing BlackBerry, Palm and Nokia. Interestingly, Nokia sells hundreds of different phone models; Samsung sells TVs, desktop monitors, etc. — doesn’t matter, iPhone still dominates web chatter.
