MTV’s social media push worked: VMA chatter doubled this year

Posted by Eric on August 29, 2011
Entertainment, Music, TV / No Comments

MTV aired the 28th annual Video Music Awards (VMA) Sunday night. MTV integrated social media into the experience, encouraging viewers to use social media and their various devices — tablets, smartphones, and their computers — in addition to tuning in via cable TV, to weigh in on the show.

We used Social Radar to analyze conversations online.

VMA mentions

VMA mentions more than doubled in 2011 compared to last year’s show.

VMA sentiment

Conversations around the 2011 VMAs were an average of 74% positive. Lady Gaga was the biggest topic of conversation, appearing in nearly 13% of all VMA mentions. Lady Gaga kicked off the night dressed as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, and stayed in character the entire show. Beyonce, who announced she was pregnant, was the next most mentioned artist, followed by Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Jay Z and Miley Cyrus.

Content breakdown

Approximately 96% of VMA chatter came via Twitter, 46% of chatter was in English, and 60% of mentions were made by males.

Artist buzz

In addition to VMA mentions being up this year, buzz around Bieber, Gaga and Beyonce are also at their highest points of the year. Looks like MTV can still generate buzz about music at least once per year.

MTV iCondom partnership generates positive buzz

MTV has partnered with iCondom to release the iCondom iPhone app, enabling users to search via GPS for the nearest place that sells condoms. Much of the information will be crowdsourced — users are encouraged to add dispensing locations and to provide quick tips like if the shop is open 24 hours or if a machine is broken.

We used Social Radar to analyze conversations online.

On average, 65% of the MTV iCondom partnership mentions came from males online.

Will the partnership help MTV’s Staying Alive campaign remove the taboo of buying contraceptives and improve global youth HIV awareness and prevention?

Jersey Shore social media buzz at all-time high

As the stock market continues to crash and America is on the verge of default, what’s on your mind? I’m hoping its not Jersey Shore.

Jersey Shore buzz

Jersey Shore buzz

Sadly, Jersey Shore buzz is at an all time high. MTV premiered Season 4 of Jersey Shore last night, filmed in Italy.

Surely with President Obama’s 50th birthday this week and all of the news surrounding the debt ceiling agreement, Obama generated more buzz than Jersey Shore…right? Wrong.

Obama vs. Jersey Shore

Jersey Shore buzz easily surpassed Obama buzz following the Season 4 premiere last night.

I guess we can at least take solace that the conversations around Jersey Shore last night and today have been primarily negative.

Sunday night MTV hosted its annual Movie Awards. This year’s show, hosted by Jason Sudeikis, included a kiss by Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, and a crotch grab by Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. Pattinson also gave an awkward tribute speech to Reece Witherspoon for the MTV Generation award.

We used Social Radar to analyze conversations online.

The Movie Awards are currently dominating conversations around MTV, being mentioned in 17% of MTV posts. Robert Pattinson is currently being mentioned in 11% of MTV posts.

Personally, I’m just glad that the Movie Awards are generating more buzz for MTV than shows like 16 and Pregnant and Jersey Shore.

Study shows Facebook ‘likes’ don’t correlate to buzz for brands

Facebook continues to become one of the most important platforms for brands to engage. The Next Web published a list of the top 25 most ‘liked’ brands on Facebook. Do more Facebook ‘likes’ mean increased chatter for brands online? We used Social Radar to run analysis on Web chatter around each of these brands in 2010. Compare the lists below.

Most Liked Brands on Facebook

Interestingly, there seems to be little correlation between which brands have the most Facebook ‘likes’ and which brands are being talked about most online.

The chart below contains the brands ranked in order of most Facebook ‘likes’, with bars representing online chatter.

Social Radar Top 50 Social Brands of 2009

Posted by Adam Coomes on January 04, 2010
Business, Entertainment, Technology / 17 Comments

The Social Radar Top 50 measures the brands with the most active Web presence based on overall online conversation volume. To create the Top 50 list, we used Social Radar to analyze millions of blog posts, news feeds, forums, social networks and Twitter posts to aggregate a list of the words and brands mentioned most frequently on the Web during all of 2008 and 2009. The list measures the number of unique individuals or sources that posted content about each brand during 2009 rather than the overall number of mentions, which would be more heavily influenced by big fans who post frequently about a specific brand.

This year has certainly been interesting. Several new brands made their way to the mainstream making our 2009 Top 50 list, such as Kindle, Amazon’s hit e-book reader, and Android, Google’s mobile OS that is spreading onto smartphones like wildfire. Interestingly, Samsung and Nokia took a big hit this year, as sexier smartphones such as iPhones and Android-powered devices from HTC and Motorola gain more attention.

The list certainly shows that 2009 was the year of Social Media. Twitter moved ahead of Google to take the number 1 spot, while Facebook and MySpace made significant leaps over big brands as well. Most video game related brands were down this year as well, including Sony, Wii, Xbox, and Nintendo. It also appears TV brands all jumped this year including Disney, MTV, Fox, BBC, CNN, ESPN, and ABC.

The September 2009 Social Radar Top 50 measures the brands with the most active Web presence based on overall online conversation volume. To create the Top 50 list, we used Social Radar to analyze millions of blog posts, news feeds, forums, social networks and Twitter posts to aggregate a list of the words and brands mentioned most frequently on the Web during September 2009. Twitter falls a bit, but still takes top spot. LG’s new BL20 Chocolate helped LG jump 11 spots. NFL rises again this month as the NFL season heats up. MTV jumps 13 spots due to buzz around the MTV Video Music awards. AT&T’s announcement of MMS support on the iPhone raised AT&T’s position up 5 spots.
