Update 04/08/09: For more details on how we determine our ranking, view The new rules of branding

If sheer volume of conversation is any indication, Twitter is the hottest brand in the market. Twitter dominates a tech-heavy list of brands in our March 2009 Social Radar Top 50. The Social Radar Top 50 measures the most social brands by the number of unique topics of conversation. These brands are top of mind for consumers and bloggers today — Social Radar determined rankings according to the number of individual websites with at least one post about each brand to accurately capture the brand’s reach across the web.

The list below is based on overall conversation volume through the month of March 2009, including blog posts, news feeds, forums, social networks and Twitter posts. The +/- number represents the ranking change since February 2009.

How do they come up with this list? How does one gauge popularity among general words”

I now enjoy Twitter (w/ Tweetdeck) more than Facebook. Twitter is dynamic like a wave. Facebook is static like a photo of the wave.

Where’s Socialrific.com on there? :) I am not surprised that Twitter is number one. I am little surprised that Fed-EX and UPS were talked about so much. I wonder…was it positive chit chat or…?

Hi Guys,
I think Fed Ex had a plane go down in March, probably why they are up so high on there. Not sure on UPS.

And the data is collected from Social Radar, which monitors millions of content sources (blogs, Twitter, etc.) for user-generated content and has a toolset which provides analytics on that content. This list was generated using a tool which can tell you how many unique individuals or sources wrote content about something in a given time span. The list is generated from one of many, many more brands which are discovered by looking at overall topics for the month and selecting out all the brands.

Anywho, its a fairly unique statistic to base this on, since its not just overall result counts (which are more heavily influenced by big fans that post a lot about a specific brand). Hope this was helpful.

Always wondered where the fmcg brands (e.g. Coke and McDonalds) were in this study, as they generate massive chatter? Also, some research that I’ve seen (granted in Asia) says that people talk more about the DS console more than they do about the Wii - esp. with the new generation. Don’t want to be seen as negative(I’m not) - it is interesting (thanks for sharing!), but it shouldn’t be read as gospel.

It does not suprise me, that twitter is at the first place regarding the headline topic. To write short messages also takes less time.

John,

I wanted to quickly reply in regards to not seeing brands like Coke and McDonald’s appearing on this list. These brands do receive a lot of mentions, but they did not make the Top 50. I think what it comes down to is they just don’t generate the levels of chatter volumes compared to cars and technology brands and products. I won’t disagree that coke or mcdonalds are being searched for as much as many of the Top 50 we’ve posted, but they aren’t discussed or buzzed about as much.

Take a look at this chart, which is a comparison of Coke (spelled “coke”, “cocacola”, or “coca-cola”), McDonalds and Audi, our number 50. http://bit.ly/3RXAe

I agree with Philip Norwak word for word: “I now enjoy Twitter (w/ Tweetdeck) more than Facebook. Twitter is dynamic like a wave. Facebook is static like a photo of the wave.”

This is exactly how I describe it to friends who don’t understand why I tweet.

Great that Obama is there as a brand at number three - shows what the power of inspiration can do. However, if we people are spending time having conversations about products, wouldn’t it be great if there was a change brand which could harness all the conversations out there about how we need to change in order to create a truly sustainable economy and world - if you are interested in helping to make this happen, and break into the top 50 next year - let me know

I think Twitter doenst deserve the No.1 spot. You cannot compare one line messages on Twitter with a insightful blog post or a news item. Shouldn’t compare Apples and Orange right?
