The 2012 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards had few surprises Sunday night. “The Help” took home several awards. Here’s the full list of awards.

The SAG Awards, which are often used to predict winners of Academy Awards, generated only around 1/4 as much buzz as the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Conversations around the 2012 SAG Awards were 88% positive. Glee was the most mentioned topic — although the TV show did not win an award, its star Lea Michelle made headlines for stealing the show on the red carpet.

Negative buzz around Paula Deen up 30%

Paula Deen, host of the Food Network’s “Paula’s Best Dishes,” confirmed on Tuesday’s “Today Show” that she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago, even as she continued to promote such dishes as “Chocolate Cheese Fudge” and “Sausage Pancake Egg Sandwiches” on her program. Angry diabetics are calling the celebrity chef a hypocrite for hiding her disease while promoting fatty, sugar-heavy foods and for partnering with a drug company that provides relief for diabetics.

People all over the world rarely celebrate the same holiday on the same day. So we decided to use Social Radar to analyze worldwide conversations all mentioning one thing in a universal language: 2012.

Overall conversations around 2012 are 88% positive. The word ‘plan’ is appearing in 15% of 2012 conversations. Interestingly, in a sign of the times, the word ‘blog’ appears in 16% of all 2012 conversations. ‘Resolution’ appears in 8% of 2012 conversations.

The best and worst of Christmas

With Christmas almost upon us Social Radar takes a look at what people online have been saying they like most (and least) about the festive season over the last 3o days.

Overall there has been 86% positivity towards Christmas in the last month, 11% negativity and 3% mixed sentiment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Over  45% of all posts mentioned ‘holiday’ with ‘love’ and ‘family’ a close second and third at 42% and 33% respectively.

 

Fortunately negative posts are few and far between but those that are mentioned include ‘ugly Christmas sweaters’ and the expense of the festive season along with posts including words such as ‘dread’, ‘miserable’ and ‘boring’.

The leadership of North Korea passed to a third generation of the Kim family Monday after the weekend death of Kim Jong Il, who ruled the Stalinist state since 1994.

North Korea conversation sentiment

Conversations around North Korea are currently 62% negavie.

The U.S. is watching North Korea closely, after reports that unstable North Korea fired short-range test missiles into the Sea of Japan. The U.S. has seen no unexpected moves by the North Korean military but is remaining “vigilant” in the wake of the death of the North Korean leader.

Movember buzz up 758%

Movember, the slang word “mo” for moustache and “November,” is an annual, month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November. Since 2004, the Movember Foundation charity has run Movember events to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and depression www.movember.com.

Mr. Clean, the 54-year-old icon, is even getting in on the act, pledging to grow facial hair for the first time ever for the good cause.

The Post Office made headlines this week thanks to news that it might eliminate Saturday mail delivery, lay off 120,000 workers and close up to 3,700 post offices—all in an effort to lessen the post office’s deficit, which will be $9.2 billion this fiscal year.

Last Friday we reported that the minor earthquakes that rumbled throughout the U.S. were generating significantly more chatter online than the impending hurricane. After Hurricane Irene swept through the East Coast over the weekend, we decided to follow up.

Hurricane Irene chatter skyrocketed over the weekend and topped overall earthquake chatter. Though hundreds of thousands were left without power and flooding continues in parts of the East Coast, the hurricane did not cause as much damage as anticipated. The Weather Channel broke an all-time ratings record on Saturday, however. Did the media sensationalize the storm to boost ratings?
