After making headlines for the wrong reasons last fall, Netflix is giving customers news to get excited about. Netflix is planning to simultaneously release the entire fourth season of Arrested Development sometime next year. The streaming video subscription service is developing 10 episodes of the series, which was cancelled for poor performance in 2006. Netflix revealed in November that it had signed a deal to revive the beloved sitcom, which it would bring exclusively to its U.S. subscribers.

Host and TV producer Dick Clark died Wednesday at the age of 82. Spokesman Paul Shefrin said the American Bandstand creator had a heart attack Wednesday morning at Saint John’s hospital in Santa Monica, a day after he was admitted for an outpatient procedure.

Downton Arby’s,” the spoof on the popular PBS series “Downton Abbey,” features a similar cast of characters to the British period drama, but instead of being set in a countryside mansion, it’s set in an Arby’s. The video has been viewed more than a million times this week.

Mad Men premiere tops NCAA tourney buzz

The Internet is buzzing about last night’s Mad Men season premiere. After a 17-month absence, a heavy marketing campaign and a flood of adoring publicity, Mad Men returned Sunday night to record ratings, up 21% over last year.

Mad Men buzz spiked 600% last night, and was mentioned in more conversations online than the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 games over the weekend.

Conversations around the Mad Men premiere were 76% positive.  January Jones was mentioned in 5% of conversations, and those conversations were 58% negative (the premiere didn’t feature a single second of January Jones, who plays Betty on the show).

Nicki Minaj turned some heads with her performance full of religious symbolism at the 2012 Grammy Awards. The performance welcomed her alter ego Roman Zolanski to the Grammy stage for the first time. The Catholic Church expressed distaste for the performance, which began with a mock confessional. Catholic League president Bill Donahue blamed the Recording Academy for allowing the number to air.

Super Bowl XLVI generates 2X more chatter than last three years’ games

Eli Manning and the New York Giants defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Sunday night’s Super Bowl 21-17. The game was seen by an average of 111.3 million people, the biggest audience in U.S. television history. We used Social Radar to analyze conversations online.

Super Bowl mentions more than doubled mentions in 2011, 2010 and 2009.

Conversations around the Super Bowl were 77% positive. The game generated more chatter than the commercials — ‘Giants’ appeared in 12% of conversations, halftime performer ‘Madonna’ appeared in 7% of conversations, and upcoming movie ‘Avengers’ appeared in 3% of all Super Bowl conversations.

Content analysis

Approximately 99% of Super Bowl mentions yesterday and today came via Twitter. The event generated more real-time conversation than blog content. An average of 58% of Super Bowl mentions came via males. Ads such as the H&M commercial featuring David Beckham effectively engaged women in the Super Bowl conversation.

Brand Bowl

With advertising selling for record prices, which brands generated the most buzz for their buck? Doritos generated the biggest spike in conversation and the most mentions among advertisers. The Doritos ‘Sling Baby’ ad was rated highest by users on a USA Today poll.

Buzz around the show skyrocketed Tuesday night. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion show was mentioned in nearly 1% of all Internet conversations Tuesday night.

The 2011 show generated 4X more buzz online than the 2010 and 2009 shows.
